Problems with breastfeeding?
Alternatives until therapy
It has been found that the mother’s breast tissue is often not taken far enough into the mouth and lead to problems for the baby and the mother, especially in premature babies. If you experience pain or nipple discoloration while breastfeeding, it is a good idea to either use a nursing cap or pump the milk and relieve the pressure on the breast that way for the time being until possible tongue tie surgery. Your lactation consultant will advise you and help you feed your baby as well as possible.
Recognize and treat other oral cavity problems
White plaque, dental plaque, can be visibly deposited on the tongue. Because the palate is often high and the tongue is not free to move or not yet trained enough to clean the tongue sufficiently on the palate, these deposits remain in the oral cavity. A fungal infection (thrush) can also lead to white coating in the mouth. Rarely, a black coating of the tongue may also develop, which should be clarified.
Does my baby have a shortened ligament?
Sometimes restless, slow drinking can be an indication of a shortened ligament. Because babies’ tongues are not yet sufficiently trained or mobile, white deposits remain in the oral cavity. In the case of a lingual frenulum, these are usually deposited at the back of the tongue behind the frenulum in the on the tongue and palate.
