Treatment frenulum of tongue / frenulum of lip in infant
The first step: the consultation
During the doctor’s visit, the previous approach to feeding is clarified with the parents. The attending physician will then, in consultation, perform the examination of the oral cavity and check the functions of the lingual or labial frenulum. If these are limited, we explain how this might be related to any difficulties the baby may be having with drinking and feeding. Medical advice is then given. It is possible to perform a procedure in the same session if pre-treatment has already been performed. Another appointment is also an option.
Diagnosis made: the treatment
Before treatment, the baby’s health history is carefully reviewed and discussed. Babies and young children are given numbing cream to prevent pain at the procedure site. Our practices use the super-pulsed CO² laser. The tongue is lifted with a tongue depressor to get a good view of the surgical site. Once the procedure is complete, the baby is returned to the mother for breastfeeding, feeding, or reassurance. We will also be happy to provide you with aftercare documentation and photos afterwards.
Aftercare and additional treatment
It is optimal if a lactation consultant is by your side before, during and after the treatment. It provides support during breastfeeding or feeding. She observes the infant’s food intake via bottle or breastfeeding. It can support recovery in the best possible way through specific exercises. If desired, a separate follow-up appointment can be scheduled with the lactation consultant.
Behavior after
Soothe, comfort, and let child drink. After separation, the first docking may take longer because the tongue and/or lip are still numb and the new mobility is still unfamiliar to the baby.
